This was due to its elegant use of detailed icons and typography, its built-in networking support, the easy-to-program object-oriented windowing system, and its solid UNIX roots. The machine ran the IRIX operating system and supported the Fortran 77, Fortran 90, C and C++ compilers. Amid heavyweight competition from Windows, Mac OS, OS/2, and BeOS in the 1990s, the NeXTSTEP operating system stood out. It had 16 gigabytes of distributed shared memory and 428 gigabytes of disk space, and connected to the Mass Storage system via HIPPI channel. RISC/os was 'a derivative of UNIX System V Release 3,' and 'also one of the roots of IRIX' footnote, with the other roots of IRIX presumably planted in IRIS Workstation Software Distribution, GL2-Wx.x.
Dataproc replaced Winterpark, an SGI PowerChallenge XL.ĭataproc was used by the Climate and Global Dynamics Division and qualified users from the general NCAR community to analyze data sets derived from observations and generated by computer simulations of the Earth’s climate.ĭataproc had 16 MIPS R10000 processors running at 250 MHz. The Silicon Graphics, Inc., Origin 2000 named "Dataproc" was delivered to NCAR on March 29, 1999, and made available for production on May 3. The IRIX name was first used around the time of release 3.0 of the operating system for SGIs IRIS 4D series of workstations and servers, in 1988.
